The collection contains the letters of a number of Quaker families from Pennsylvania. Included in the collection is the correspondence of the Haines, Rhoads, Garrett, Evans and Branson families who resided in Philadelphia, Rosemont (Montgomery County), Springfield (Delaware County) and in the vicinity of Muncy (Lycoming County).
The namesake of the collection was born in Springfield, PA and married a Philadelphia doctor, William Ellis Haines, in 1841. William died in 1846 one year after Mary gave birth to their first child, Hannah. Mary R. Haines taught in Quaker schools in Philadelphia and Westtown after the death of her husband.
Mary Rhodes Haines’ daughter Hannah married John Biddle Garrett in 1866, a Quaker and businessman from Philadelphia who owned a mill and later was an executive for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. John and Hannah lived in Philadelphia but later settled at Clovercroft, the family estate in Rosemont, Montgomery County sometime in the 1880s.
John and Hannah had two daughters, Frances (b. 1872) and Mary (b. 1867). Frances was married in 1894 to Thomas Branson a doctor who received his degrees from Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced medicine in Philadelphia and Delaware County. Thomas and Frances had four children (Mary, Frances, Thomas Jr., and John.) Mary married Henry Stokes Williams in 1900.

The bulk of the collection is made up of correspondence with approximately 7 folders of non-correspondence that includes a partial journal of Mary Rhoads Haines written while her husband was dying. Other non-correspondence includes receipts, reports, a contract, newsletters, invitations and calling cards.
The majority of the letters were written by Hannah (Haines) Garrett, John Biddle Garrett, Frances (Garrett) Branson, and Mary (Garrett) Williams between 1870 and 1900. The bulk revolve around family and daily life with details regarding housekeeping, domestic activities, shopping, social visits, and health. Secondary topics include Quaker affairs, financial matters, medicine, travel, and holidays.
The letters are arranged alphabetically by author and chronologically within each folder. Boxes one through six contain correspondence. Box seven includes unidentified correspondence and non-correspondence. Box eight contains addressed and postmarked envelopes from the collection.
