THE DR. MIAN JAN FELLOWSHIP

The Dr. Mian Jan Fellowship has generously supported emerging professionals in the quest for CCHC to expand and share its holdings about the South Asian and Southeast Asian communities in Chester County. Each fellowship has provided a larger window into the experiences of people who live in this multi-faceted place that we call Chester County, PA.

EXPLORING COMMON THEMES

This digital exhibit provides just a few insights into the rich narratives of families and friends as they navigate living, learning, and working here. Former West Chester University student Charisse Octavio undertook numerous oral history interviews. Recent Rowan University graduate student Gianna Leonen shaped those narratives into these digital exhibits that shed light on geography, people, time, and experiences.

Delve into these stories and consider how you, too, are part of this colorful tapestry. Consider how you might capture and share your own story!

Culture, Faith, and Challenges

Gianna Leonen March 18, 2025

Although the five interviewees, Esmeraldo Octavio, Chanda Octavio, Charisse Octavio, Pallavi Chavan, and Prutha Chavan, all shared unique stories of their own experiences as South Asians and Southeast Asians in Chester County, there are many similar themes and topics discussed throughout the various interviews. The themes of culture, faith, and challenges examines how each person had their own distinct journey to Chester County yet there are many ways in which their stories connect.
