Mott Hooton (April 16, 1838 – May 30, 1920) was born in Philadelphia to his parents Mott Hooton, Sr., and Ann Eliza Carpenter. His father died while Mott was a toddler and his mother returned to her family home in West Chester with Mott and his older brother Frank. She soon was remarried to Maris Rhoads. They had two children together, Sallie and Annie.
Mott entered the military on June 3, 1861, as a sergeant of Company A, 1st Regiment Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry and served a long and distinguished career, retiring in 1902 with the rank of Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War, throughout the West in the Indian Territories, and in Cuba during the Spanish American War. He was awarded for gallant and meritorious services in the Wilderness Campaign, Virginia, and gallant services in action at Spring Creek, Montana.
Throughout all that time, he maintained constant correspondence with family members and friends. This collection provides a rich insight into the man’s personality and a limited record of the expansion of the United States.
The collection spans the years from 1854 to 1920. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence with family members. The balance of the collection contains military papers and correspondence and personal papers related to travel and interests.
Manuscripts in the collection are arranged chronologically according to subject. First in order are those relating to the Civil War followed by family correspondence. Next are records of his world-wide travel, miscellaneous correspondence, genealogy, and papers. Books from his travel and military service, photographs, journals, and newspaper clippings complete the collection.
