Biography:

Jacob M. Zook born in 1821 lived for the greater part of his life on the same farm in Exton, PA that his great-grandfather Mortiz Zug had purchased in 1770. Jacob Sr. farmed for the majority of his adulthood and operated a lime quarry on this property in Exton from approximately 1856 to 1882.  He was a devoted Quaker and active in local politics.  He held a number of positions in Chester County government including county commissioner and school director.  He died on the family farm in Exton in 1891

Jacob married Rebecca Ashbridge of Downingtown, PA, the wealthy daughter of Geroge Ashbridge, and had four children: Jane Downing Zook, Mary Ashbridge Zook (b. 1851), Rachel V.A. Zook (b. 1853), Elizabeth Zook (b. 1855) and Jacob M. Zook (b.1860).  Rebecca (Ashbridge) Zook died in 1861.  After their mother’s death, the Zook children were educated in Philadelphia.  Upon reaching adolescence, they shared time between Philadelphia and Exton assisting their father and helping to raise their young brother. As adults, Jane and Rachel operated and taught at a boarding school in Philadelphia while Mary remained for much of her life in Exton with her father.  In 1881 Jane broke off a wedding engagement with a socially well connected man in New York City.  In 1887, Jane took a position in South Carolina home schooling the children of a well to do southern family.  Jane returned to Pennsylvania and in 1891 married Phillip P. Chase.  Jane would be the only one of the Zook sisters to marry.  The Zook sisters traveled frequently during their lives visiting friends and relatives in the Midwest and New England states.

Collections Scope:

The large majority of the collection contains correspondence with only 8 folders of non-correspondence that include receipts/bills, creative writing, invitations, pamphlets/circulars, trade/calling cards.  The majority of the correspondence relates to Jacob Zook Sr. and his children Rachel, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane and Jacob Jr.  The collection is separated into four series:
