Biography:

The letters of the Whitaker/Pennypacker families who were brought together with the marriage of Isaac A. Pennypacker and Anna Maria Whitaker in 1839.  The two were married in Phoenixville, Chester County.  They had four children of which three lived to adulthood.  Isaac A. Pennypacker graduated from medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1835 and started a practice in Phoenixville.  Then, in 1854, he began teaching at the Philadelphia College of Medicine.  He died in 1856 from typhoid fever.

Dr. Pennypacker’s eldest son began working at the age of 13 as a clerk in a Philadelphia.  He served briefly in the Civil War with a Pennsylvania militia company in 1863 was then drafted and excused when his Uncle hired a replacement.  Samuel studied law at the University of Pennsylvania, practiced in Philadelphia and was heavily involved in civic affairs. After holding a series of judgeships and public offices in Philadelphia, he was elected governor of Pennsylvania in 1902.  Samuel died in 1916.

Isaac R. Pennypacker, son of Isaac and Maria Anna, attended the Hill School in Pottstown in the late 1860s.  Isaac R. went on to work for a number of newspapers in Philadelphia.  He also published works of poetry and history.  He wrote an article titled (title) that was published in the first issue of the American Mercury in (date)

The Whitaker family owned a number of iron furnaces in both Pennsylvania and Maryland including the Durham Iron Works in Montgomery County Pennsylvania and the Principio Furnace in Cecil County Maryland.

Collections Scope:

Three bound volumes of letters.  The first two volumes contains letters sent to Anna Maria (Whitaker) Pennypacker, wife of Dr. Isaac A. Pennypacker and mother of future Pennsylvania Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker.  The third volume contains letters of the Whitaker family and Isaac R. Pennypacker, the son of Isaac A. Pennypacker and Anna Maria Pennypacker.  Isaac R. Pennypacker’s margin notes appear throughout all volumes.

The first volume–1821-1866 -contains the letters of the Whitaker children and letters related to the Whitaker family’s iron business.  Also includes letters to Anna Maria Pennypacker from her husband, Dr. Isaac A. Pennypacker, related to his time in Philadelphia as a medical student and eventually as a practicing physician and instructor at the Philadelphia College of Medicine.  Includes letters of Anna Maria and Isaac’s children after the Isaac’s death in 1856.  The early letters of Samuel W. Pennypacker describe his work in Kensington (Philadelphia) as a drugstore clerk and apprentice including detailed description of his daily life in the city.  Also contains his brief stint in the army during the Civil War and the beginning of his studies to become a lawyer.  Henry Clay Pennypacker began corresponding with his mother when he went to work in Philadelphia and lived with his brother Samuel.  Volume I also has a number of letters from Joseph R. Whitaker, brother of Anna Maria Pennypacker, who appears to have acted as a caretaker for the Pennypacker boys after the death of their father.

The majority of the correspondence in Volume II is to Anna Maria Pennypacker from her sons Samuel, Henry, James and Isaac.  Letters were sent while the boys were living in Philadelphia, attended school or traveling to various destinations in the Northeast and Upper South.  Isaac sent letters while attending the Hill School in Pottstown.  Both Henry and Samuel sent letters from Philadelphia detailing their early lives as up and coming professionals–Samuel as a lawyer in training and Henry as a clerk in a relatives store.  Also includes letters to Anna Maria Pennypacker from the Whitaker family in Maryland and her sisters, Gertrude and Elizabeth.  The majority of these letters relay family news or details of the family iron business and related activities.  Letters in the late 1890s include details of a trip to Europe by Samuel W. and Isaac Pennypacker along with their families.  Volume II also contains non-correspondence including school essays by James Pennypacker, itemized expense sheets, invitations/announcements and calling cards.

The final bound volume is titled “Letters, Whitaker Family, 1832-1934.”  The majority of the letters deal with the family iron business in Pennsylvania (Durham Iron Works) and Maryland (Principio Iron Works, Elk Iron Works).  Comprised mainly of letters to and from the children of Joseph W. Whitaker (Phoenixville, Chester County).  In addition to correspondence related to business, letters also relay news of family and health. The first pages of this volume includes photographs of George W. Whitaker, Joseph Whitaker and a photo of the Durham Iron Works.

NOTE:

The elder Joseph Whitaker is entered without a middle initial.  His son appears as Joseph R. Whitaker.
