[The following excerpts taken from a brief history (1995?) in Folder 25, Box 20]
“The history of the League of Women Voters in ChesterCounty goes back to the founding of the organization in 1920 and for all the 75 years the League has been around it has been active in the County.
“The first members of the League were the ladies of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, an organization which had worked for more than 50 years to attain voting rights for woman. NAWSA President Carrie Chapman Catt proposed the creation of a League of Women Voters at their final national convention in Chicago in 1919 and in February 1920 with just three states left to ratify the amendment, NAWSA became the League of Women Voters. Catt, in her convention speech, asked:
What could be more natural than that women who have attained their political independence should desire to give service in token of their gratitude? What could be more appropriate than that such women should do for the coming generation what those of a preceding period did for them?…Let is then raise up a league of women voter…a league that shall be non-partisan and non-sectarian in character..
“While the national League was being formed in Chicago, it was also being formed in Pennsylvania. On December 3, 1919 at the 4th annual convention of the Chester County Woman Suffrage Party it was reported that the Pennsylvania Women Suffrage Party had voted to dissolve and at the same time form a new organization, the Pennsylvania League of Women Citizens. (“Citizens” would be changed to “Voters” automatically when the 19th amendment was ratified)
“The ChesterCounty members followed suit by reorganizing as the Chester County League of Women Citizens (“until such time as we can substitute Voters”) and the following year the first annual meetings of the Chester County League of Women Voters took place. The minutes indicate there are 129 members in West Chester, 11 members in Downingtown, 27 members in West Grove and 138 members in Easttown and Tredyffrin. The minutes also refer to members in Kennett Square Coatesville, Elverson, Birmingham, East Bradford and officers from LincolnUniversity and Whitford.
“The League continued on a county-wide basis until the 1950s. In 1950-51 Kennett Square and West Grove tried setting up a unit but was not continued. In 1952 the LWV of Chester County became the League of Women Voters of West Chester. 1957 saw the formation of the LWV of Tredyffrin, an offshoot of the West Chester League. In 1960, the Chester Council was formed with two Leagues, West Chester and Upper Main Line. Southern Chester County came along in 1961. Later, the West Chester League became the LWV of Central Chester County.”
Includes the records of three branches of the League of Women Voters (LWV) in ChesterCounty including the Chester County League of Women Voters, the League of Women Voters of the West Chester area and the Southern Chester County League of Women Voters. The collection has been split into two record groups the first containing the records of the Chester County League of Women Voters and the League of Women Voters of the West Chester area. Record group two contains the records of the Southern Chester County League of Women Voters. The two record groups are arranged as follows:
Record Group 1 (RG1) – Order of records a result of previous arrangement by Historical Society staff.
Record Group 2 (RG2) – The original order maintained but contents of “overstuffed” folders have been divided into multiple folders. The first term in each folder description is the term used on the original folder. Folders have been divided and detail added to folder description but the original order by subject has been retained.
Collection contains a variety of administrative documents like minutes, reports, announcements and correspondence. The bulk of correspondence relates to general League business sent to League members. The collection also includes literature and information on social and political issues related to the League’s work. The bulk of the subject related material can be found in RG2 but is scattered throughout the collection. Also includes publications from the national League as well as publications from the local ChesterCounty branches.
NOTE: Pin from National League of Women Voters Annual Convention, St. Louis 1938 owned by Grace Britton Moore has been removed to Curatorial Dept.
