Collections Scope:

This collection consists primarily of letters written by and to the Havard, Reinhardt and Jones families.  One of the primary recipients of letters is Lydia Reinhardt Havard Stephens.  Much of the correspondence is between women related to her, primarily her sisters.  There are also letters between the members of her mother’s family, the Reinhardts.  The letters range from 1823-1866, with many of them written during the Civil War, including some from enlisted soldiers.  One in particular is written by Benjamin H. Roberts, Lydia’s cousin, who was killed by typhoid fever in Virginia while serving in the Union army.  Many of the letters refer to adolescents being away at school.  Members of the Jones family are prevalent in receiving and writing the letters.  They mainly write to the Reinhardts and Lydia Havard.  This collection also contains other papers such as invitations and programs to various events.  Also in the collection are partial letters and financial papers of Isaac Reinhardt, as well as a family chart that was prepared while processing the collection.

Collection Arrangement:

This collection is arranged alphabetically by author of the correspondence, and chronologically within each folder.
