Join Dr. Nancy Mowll Mathews for a look at the Cassatt family while they lived in Chester County, and artist Mary Cassatt’s early life.
This talk will visit the Cassatt family, including artist Mary Cassatt, in their many homes in Pennsylvania and France. We will get to know their friends and family, gathering amidst the art on their walls and in their famous daughter’s studio. We will focus on the Cassatt home on Westtown-Thornton Road outside of West Chester where Mary Cassatt began her art studies and the family weathered the Civil War. In many ways these years in the early 1860s shaped her career and future life.
Dr. Nancy Mowll Mathews received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, N.Y.U. where she began her long career as a preeminent Cassatt scholar. Of the more than fifteen books and exhibitions she has produced, the best known are Cassatt and Her Circle: Selected Letters, Cassatt: The Color Prints and Mary Cassatt: A Life. Most recently she curated and co-wrote the catalogue for Mary Cassatt: An American Impressionist in Paris for the Jacquemart-André Museum (Paris, 2018). Born in Baltimore, she grew up in Haverford Township outside of Philadelphia.
