There are myriad Asian American communities. They differ in country of origin, ethnicity, language, class, religion, gender, and more. From the colonial era to the present, generations of Asian immigrants and their American-born descendants have transformed the face of America and been affected by it. What has been the unique story of Philadelphia’s Chinatown? It has often been overshadowed by Chinatowns in San Francisco and New York City. This small but culturally rich community is much more than a tourist attraction—it is a neighborhood with diverse voices, marked by a history of struggle and activism.
Dr. Cecilia Chien is the daughter of Chinese immigrants. She is a professor of East Asian history at West Chester University. Her research interests include the regional history of the Yangzi Delta, kinship studies and genealogy, and family history as it intersects with China’s heritage preservation, environmental conservation, and pop culture. She serves on the Board of the Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies and is a longtime CCHC member.
