This family evening event will show children what life was like in the past before electricity. Learn about all the different sources of light (like candles, lanterns, and rushlights), and what bedtime was like, from pajamas, to brushing your teeth, to tightening your rope bed. Walk through the museum and learn the stories of the men, women, and children of the past, and complete a scavenger hunt for special prizes. Dr. Karen Schwarz from the Mather Planetarium will explore the phases of the moon with kids, and engage in a special astronomical activity.
The entire exhibit “Becoming Chester County” will be open for exploration during this event, as well as our child-friendly History Lab. This event is best for children ages 6-12; if your child is afraid of the dark, this might not be the best event for them. Activities are ongoing throughout the program, so you can arrive at any point in the evening. Galleries may be different temperatures, so we recommend wearing comfortable layers–and remember your flashlight!
Space will be limited to provide the best atmosphere for our participants. Admission is $7.00 for children ages 6-18 and $9.00 for adults; members are free with discount code (e-mail [email protected] for code). Children 5 and under are free. REGISTER
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. No food or snacks will be available for purchase, but there are plentiful sit-down and quick dining options in downtown West Chester.
Discovery in the Dark will run rain or shine (it’s entirely indoors.) In the event of dangerous weather forcing CCHC to cancel the event, all tickets will be refunded.
