This manuscript collection covers that portion of Jean Kane Foulke’s life after she and her husband, George Rhyf-edd Foulke, moved to “Bala Farm” in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The earliest letters date from 1895, while a family scrapbook and one of her notebooks were probably compiled in the 1880’s. Jean Kane Foulke (hereafter referred to as JKF) was 28 years old in 1895 and 34 when her husband’s death left her a widow. For purposes of organization the collection is divided into three broad categories:

I. Private life – personal correspondence with family and friends; clippings, and other printed material about JKF, her family, and friends; genealogical data. Boxes 1-12.

II. Social service, community and volunteer activities – JKF’s participation in political, civic, cultural, humanitarian, agricultural, health-related, and suffrage activities. Boxes 13-20.

III. Professional and income-producing activities – JKF’s farm management career, Pennsylvania Farm Institute and Farm Advisor work, lecturing, and government service. This section contains data about Bala Farm. 11 Boxes 21-39.

IV. Additional Accruals: JKF worked for the Philadelphia decorator firm of Priestman and Borie Decorators where she did a variety of art projects in the 1900 era. In addition whe served on the Board of Trustees of the West Chester State College in the late 1930’s. Box 41.
