Letters of the Lupton and Speakman families, primarily from and to Mary Speakman Lupton. Correspondents include her parents, Wilson and Eliza Roberts Speakman; her husband, Hugh S. Lupton; her daughter, Carrie Damon Lupton; and her sons, Daniel Walker Lupton, James Roberts Lupton, and Hugh Sidwell Lupton; as well as correspondence of her uncle, James B. Roberts; aunts, Susan D. Roberts and Mary Roberts Walker; uncle by marriage, Daniel Walker; and various cousins including Susan Mary Roberts Walker (later Wickersham), daughter of Mary and Daniel Roberts. Included in this collection of letters are many of the envelopes, some with stamps and postmarks, as well as some greeting cards and invitations. It should be mentioned that letters were intended to be shared; even if a letter were addressed to only one person, it was understood that other family members would read it. In some cases an explicit direction to forward the letter to another family member was given; very rarely a letter might indicate that it was for the intended recipient’s eyes only. Two or more people might add a bit to an outgoing letter in order to save on paper and postage. Hugh S. Lupton was an agent of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, and many of Mary’s and Hugh’s letters are on company letterhead paper.
The Luptons and Speakmans were middle-class families of the late 19th and early 20th century who belonged to the Society of Friends. Although some of the letters were written during the period of the Civil War, only one or two direct references are made to it, and it is hard to assess how much, if any, impact the war had on their daily lives. If the letters written by Daniel Walker to his daughter, Susan Mary, are typical, it does not seem to have affected his ability to travel and conduct business to a significant degree, as he rarely refers to the war. The fact that he was writing to a young woman, however, may have inhibited his choice of topics. Most of the correspondence concerns family matters, health concerns, business and farming conditions, friends and neighbors, and meetings of the Society of Friends.
Mary Speakman Lupton was the daughter of Eliza Roberts and Wilson Speakman. She had two sisters, Annie (1854- ) and Esther [“Hetty”] (1858-1906). Annie married Herbert L. Speakman in 1879; they moved to Monmouth, Illinois, and then to Jerome, Idaho. Annie and Herbert had four children: Arthur, Mary, Bertha, and Harold. Mary’s younger sister, Esther, did not marry and remained at home in West Chester with Eliza and Wilson Speakman.
Mary Speakman (b. 1856) married Hugh S. Lupton (b. 1845) in1880, and they had four children: Daniel Walker (b. 1881), Carrie Damon (b. 1883), James Roberts (b. 1892), and Hugh Sidwell Jr. (b. 1895).
Mary’s mother, Elizabeth (Eliza) Roberts (1820-1905), was the daughter of James B. Roberts (1783-1823) and Esther Darlington (1793-1877). in 1880 she married Wilson Speakman (1806-1904). She had four siblings: Susan D. (1815-1898), Edward D. (1817-1889), Mary (1819-1855), and James B. 1813-1903).
Susan Mary Roberts Walker (b. 1849) was the daughter of Mary Roberts and Daniel Walker (1807-1875). In 1855, when Mary was six years old, her mother died in childbirth and her infant brother, Edward, also died.
Mary spent the years from 1862 to 1868 in West Chester at the home of cousin William Darlington, where her unmarried aunt, Susan Darlington Roberts, also lived.
James B. Walker went to California in 1850 after his marriage to Lucy Cynthia Lewis, and she joined him there in about a year. After Lucy’s death, James remarried in 1893, to Agnes L. Brown.
