Biography:

Scrapbooks, or books printed with blank pages and filled with short notes, printed ephemera, and mementos, became commonplace in the 19th century. Commercial binding and printing made both scrapbooks and the mementos that filled them cheaper and more plentiful. Before the introduction of commercial scrapbooks, recycled books, like old account books, provided a backdrop for selected scraps. Scrapbook making was common among women and girls, and books included both homemaking items as well as personal mementos. Men may compile a scrapbook of farming information or professional reference articles. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, scrapbooks were used in the classroom to compile informative scraps into a resource resembling a textbook. While rarely used in education today, scrapbooking to capture memories or homemaking ideas is still popular, both in traditional book form and in online reimaginings like Pinterest.

The CCHS Scrapbook collection includes several types of scrapbooks. Many books are collections of thematically related newspaper clippings. Others are personal scrapbooks of cards, letters, and mementos.

Collection Arrangement:

The collection is described at the item level. When possible, materials from the same donor or organization have been housed together. However, most scrapbooks in our collection are of unique provenance and are not organized on a specific system. Researchers are encouraged to thoroughly search the finding aid for names, organizations, or topics of interest.
